“...In the Sky Hopes”
In case you didn't know, the ladies are kind of a big deal right now.
Global policy is being reshaped by the goal of empowering girls in the developing world. And it’s not just because these are the wives and mothers of tomorrow – they have the power to become incredible changemakers in their own right. One Home, Many Hopes is a Kenyan organization committed to making that future a reality. Nine years ago, when Kenyan journalist Anthony Mulungo met a young orphan named Gift, she was foraging for food in the trash heaps of Mombasa. She was all of six.
Moved by her circumstances, Mulungo adopted Gift with the assurance she would get a proper education. In 2007, journalist Thomas Keown visited Mulaungo and Gift, and the overwhelming response to the story he wrote on them led to the birth of One Home, Many Hopes.
Since then, money has been raised to expand Mudzini Kwetu (Swahili for “Our Home”) to house 60 girls, and to build classrooms capable of educating 720 students. Go to the site and meet the girls of OHMH, you will fall in love just as Mulungo did.
Breaking Ground 2011 runs from October 17th to November 20th; if you would like to give the gift of education for Gift and others, just click here. This year, the effort moves beyond the classroom: aiming to turn the grounds into “an elite school raising justice-minded leaders.”
With your help One Home, Many Hopes will be singing... "We had high hopes, high in the sky apple pie hopes"!
