100,000 homes for 100,000 homeless Americans by July 2013
It may seem like an impossible task, but the 100,000 Homes campaign is doing everything they can to make sure this becomes a reality.
As we enter 2011, we are faced with a growing crisis. Homelessness has increased by 9% in the USA. We really have no idea how brutal life on the streets can be, taking it’s toll by cutting an average of 25 years off the average lifespan. Nobody wants to see another human suffer, and getting these people a proper home is possible. Did you know that the health costs of leaving people on the streets far exceed the cost of supportive housing?
The 100,000 Homes campaign goal is to target the most vulnerable, chronic homeless and not only get them off the streets, but get them off the streets for good by providing permanent solutions – a real home.
The campaign was launched this past July by a New York organization called Common Ground and 20 like minded organizations. This is not a charity that is raising money to pass on to someone else, but instead 100,000 homes is a campaign with real steps, solutions and change agents to help communities reach out to the chronically homeless and work towards a concrete end to an issue that doesn’t have many cures.
To date, 64 communities have enrolled in the campaign and collectively they have housed over 6,800 homeless people. Momentum is growing… 193,200 may not be so far off and is attainable with your support.
Check for upcoming events in your community. Think outside the cardboard box and submit a story with your idea on how to help solve homelessness, join them on facebook, follow them on twitter.
We can all be a part of the solution.
