A Sweet Slice of Life
On a cool summer night... what's sweeter than a warm slice of pie with a melty heap of vanilla bean ice cream sliding down the sides? But can pie do more than just satisfy your sweet tooth? At Pie Ranch in Pescadero, California they’re serving up a plate full of knowledge with every delicious bite.
Pie Ranch teaches students, apprentices, and lifelong learners alike the basics of farming. Their root to table philosophy makes learners say, grocery store who? Pie Ranch educators uproot city mice from the daily hustle and bustle, and put them in the fields to plant all natural produce that they later get to cook, and eat. New found skills and philosophies in hand, students go back to the city with an organic perspective that they can utilize for years and years to come.
Cultivating hope for the future, Pie Ranch has a Youth Education and Leadership Development Program (view video clip) that shows high school students exactly where their food comes from, and smarter ways to eat it. They also provide year long apprenticeship programs detailing the ins and outs of being a farmer. If you fall into neither category don’t be discouraged, Pie Ranch has various programs throughout the year for your farm knowledge needs... like making a delicious farm fresh pie!
