Goods That Educate & Empower: Njabini Apparel
At Milkshake, we believe in the power of the consumer. Instead of buying items from big chains, we encourage readers to support artisans around the globe. This back-to-school season, we want to do just that, while supporting the efforts of some very ambitious college students—Meet Njabini Apparel.
Why We Love It!
With a tagline of "Create. Inspire. Empower." how could we not love Njabini? Their products, which are all handmade in Africa, are gorgeous reminders of what artistry human hands can make. Take, for example, the Emily Beach Tote. This cuter-than-cute tote bag is made with printed patterned Khanga cloth and could easily fit all your textbooks—or your sunscreen and sunglasses, if you're still feeling the summer rush. Njabini Apparel also makes lovely clutches, sweet knits, and bold jewelry. See it all in their online shop.
But like most of our favorite stores, Njabini is more than just a place to find pretty things—it's also a force for good. Njabini Apparel was started by three students, Mike Behan, Tom Mwangi and Erin O'Malley, who met while on a volunteer trip in Kenya. They wanted to find a way to help families out of the cycle of poverty, so they started at the head of the family—with the moms. Njabini Apparel empowers disadvantaged and handicapped women through employment and fair wages. According to an article in The Boston Globe, the employees at Njabini make four times the natural average income, thus giving their children a brighter future.
High Hopes
To further aid the kids in Kenya, the company has also pledge to give 15% of all profits to Flying Kites Global, a non-profit that provides education and support for children in Africa at their Leadership Academy. Located in Kinangop, Kenya, the center gives shelter, education and opportunities to some of Kenya's most disadvantaged children. Learn more about their cause (and find out how to volunteer) at FlyingKites.org.
