Adorn & Unite with Beads from Bali
Seeing too few economic opportunities for Balinese women, this former Peace Corps volunteer crafted a beautiful solution.
The Peace Corps. Kiva. Give2Asia. With experiences like those under her belt, Cissy DeLuca knows the difference between fair labor practices and the opposite without having to dig too deeply. So when she moved to Bali in 2010 and saw a lack of fair, equitable economic opportunities for the women around her -- despite the fact that there were many gifted artisans among them -- she did what she'd become used to doing: she rolled up her shirt sleeves and created a solution.
DeLuca used her hard-earned knowledge to set up a brand that enabled local women to do what they loved -- craft beautiful jewelry and small goods -- and make a fair profit from their efforts. Upon hiring several of the most talented women in her neighborhood, she gave each of them her own profile on the company's website and named the brand "Bersatu." In Indonesian, the word means "united."
Bertasu's goods range from $13 for a set of obsidian earrings to $35 for a snakeskin clutch. Click here to get acquainted with the Bersatu team's talents and own a little piece of the neighborhood for yourself.
