Are You Ready To Jam?
We usually think about jamming in terms of music. Fans of Phish and other jam bands know exactly what we’re talking about. It’s about getting together, rocking out, and not worrying too much about the outcome. It’s a celebration of the process, which usually produces some pretty cool results.
Though it’s a little different, the Global Service Jam operates along the same lines, but instead of making music, every event works to make the world a more pleasant place. February 24, like-minded people will come together at locations throughout the globe to figure out new and innovative ways to approach a theme. Over the course of two days, these teams will pool their intellectual resources to come up with a design, a prototype, or a plan of action. Though the teams are working on a local level, the non-profit activity is truly a global affair: 2012 will see Jams in Mongolia, Egypt, Mexico and almost everywhere in between.
But what’s the theme? That’s the thing: no one knows. Founders Markus Hormess and Adam Lawrence designed the jams to be spontaneous, and part of that is coming in without a plan. However, we can tell you about the themes of previous jams. In 2011, they held two events, “(super)HEROES” and “PLAYGROUNDS,” both of which sound mighty fun.
And you don’t have to be a design professional to join in the jam. Everyone is welcome to bring their skills. Just come armed with a positive attitude and a desire to collaborate. Things will flow naturally from there.
