Brave Is Beautiful
Words are powerful. They can hurt and heal, work as talismans or powerful symbols. For Jessica Hendricks, a 23-year-old graduate of NYU, the one word that came to mean the world to her was "brave." Not only does it play a defining role in her aptly-named jewelry line, The Brave Collection, but it also marks a significant shift in the way we look at women who have been forced into sexual slavery.
Why We Love It!
First, we want to point out that Hendrick's line of bracelets is incredibly original and strikingly beautiful. Every bracelet features a metal charm that features the word "brave" written in Cambodian. Whether they are strung on red silk cords or clasped by a gold chain, every bracelet is a delicate and stylish reminder to face each day fearless. Bracelets are made of sterling silver, 14k gold or brass.
But why brave? In Jessica's own words: "The word "Brave" never meant a whole lot to me in my first world life. Bravery was for dentist appointments and first dates. Yet traveling in Cambodia, I had the privilege of meeting girls who gave the word new meaning, to say the least. These girls were victims of unfathomable exploitation. And yet, with grace, these women were able to transform themselves from victims to survivors, reclaiming their lives against all odds."
The Good News
Every piece at The Brave Collection is made by Cambodian metalsmiths in Phnom Penh. The company provides employment to women in need while raising awareness about the very real issue of sex trafficking.
