Change Your Bedding, Change A Life
If home is where the heart is, bed is where the soul lies. It's where you go to relax, decompress, and refresh yourself after a long day. It's not just a place to sleep—it's a sanctuary. Treat your bed to a new outfit with BaBa Blankets.
Founded by E. Aminata Brown, BaBa Blankets has been producing high-quality, hand-sewn blankets since June of 2000. Brown had been living in Ghana for years when she met a group of young women who worked as load-carriers, or "kaya yo" in the markets of Accra. Their work was hard and their days were long, but Brown was inspired by their community. She asked the women what they would do to change their lives, and the girls replied, "I would learn to sew."
Brown realized that she could make this wish become a reality. And thus BaBa Blankets was born.
But BaBa Blankets is not a charity—it's a business that believes in the quality of their products. Proceeds from the sales of their colorful, unique blankets go to supporting the social enterprise. "Your purchases provide sustainable income and ongoing creative development opportunities for our collective," explains their website. "Through our trade, we continue to evolve our artistic skills and technical abilities, while also enriching an ever growing number of resources available to our collective."
And in 2007, BaBa Blankets expanded their efforts to launch the Stay-In-School Tuition Assistance (SISTA) program to help girls in rural Ghana finish high school. Unlike BaBa Blankets, SISTA Works is a non-profit that provides direct aid to girls in marginalized communities. Every time you purchase a piece from BaBa Blankets, not only are you helping the seamstresses sew a better life, you're also helping pay the tuition of a young African girl.
