Dandy With A Cause
You may recall that a few months ago, we brought you a sleek brand of socially conscious men’s footwear that was just as philanthropic as it was unapologetically loud. Then we thought – why stop at the feet? Young menswear line Bora Wear will keep you brightly styled and making a difference from head to toe.
When James Muna finished his degree at Cornell, he knew a lot more about the Millennium Development Goals and the promise they represented for the countries of the developing world. So he founded Bora Wear as a way to promote the shift towards greater women’s rights, and investment in education and health. In a personal touch, his company’s operations take place in Embu, Kenya – his mother’s hometown.
Why We Love It!
Patterns! Bora Wear is a wild explosion of colors and prints, cheekily mixing traditional East African kanga and kitenge fabrics with Western textiles for a hip contemporary look. Even better, the shirts are stitched by HIV+ women in Kenya who are paid above market level wages and whose work embodies the idea that direct empowerment of women is the deepest, most lasting way to lift a society higher.
The Good News
A significant proceeds of Bora Wear’s proceeds are donated to an orphanage for HIV+ children called TOTO Love. The first shipments of the fledgling label’s wares will emerge in time for you to head back to school in style.
