Down on the Farm
"Farm-fresh" is synonymous with local, healthy, simply good. Wouldn't it be great if we could just step outside and milk a cow, pick some vegetables, and eat farm-fresh, organic fare any time?
Now you can enjoy the freshest products even if your neighbors aren't a flock of sheep. Blackberry Farm, is an acclaimed luxury hotel and working farm that is nestled in the foothills of the Great Smokey Mountains of Tennessee. The farm generates a variety of heirloom produce from the garden; succulent herbs, farm-fresh eggs, and makes artisan cheeses from East Friesian sheep.
Fortunately, you can get these seasonal jams and cheeses, heirloom seeds, artisanal olive oil, and other organic goodies shipped directly to your doorstep (or doorman).
One of their specialties is the Blackberry Blue Cheese that is only in season from May-January. This cheese is made at the end of the season when the ewes' milk is the creamiest and richest. The Blackberry Blue is made in small batches, best to order now so you don’t miss out. You do have to order by the pound but ... that’s not going to be a problem, is it? $28.00/lb.
Close your eyes and eat the Thyme Lemon Marmalade and you will be transported to the farm on a warm spring day. Both sweet and savory, perfect to baste on fish or use with olive oil for a dressing. Handmade goodness that is just coming into season now, so buy it before it disappears. $9.50
And you really ought to try the to-die-for Pickled Hot Green Tomatoes that are farm grown and have been pickled with four types of mild and hot peppers. $12.50
After a couple of these savory treats you may just find yourself on your way to Blackberry Farm!
