Down the Home Stretch
If you could help send Afghan children to school with the purchase of a handwoven silk pillow in gorgeous jewel tones or leopard cashmere shawl, you would do it, wouldn’t you? Of course you would. And ZAANHA is the only—and best—way to do it.
Since 2006, Wendy Summer, the founder of ZAANHA, has been making trips to Afghanistan to mentor local women and encourage them to be entrepreneurs. Enchanted by their intricate embroidery, Summer helped give the women the chance to use their skills to make and sell gorgeous silk scarves, home décor, and jackets.
And with every sale of these luxurious products, money directly supports one of the most important desires in the Afghan women’s lives: to see their children educated.
In order to enter the Afghan public school system, children have to meet certain scholastic criteria established by the Afghan Ministry of Education. The Aschiana School set up an accelerated 3 year program for the children so they can enter the public schools. ZAANHA funded the first 3 months. With only 3 months to go the budget has been shaved to the bone.
Meet these precious children and help them continue their education which is so vital to help them escape poverty.
It would be a tragedy to have to close the school when they are so close to the finish line!
Aschiana is an Afghan organization that provides literacy and vocational training for Afghan street children and teaches them about children's rights. These children are the poorest of the poor and many of them are orphans or live in single parent households. They work on the streets selling gum, socks, washing cars, shining shoes etc.
