Dreaming In Stitches
Quilting has long been a powerful symbol of hope—be it for freedom from slavery or a cure for AIDS. There are rich traditions from all over the world; there’s just something uniquely human about creating great beauty out of materials with untapped potential. The Anchal Project uses traditional kantha quilt making and educational partner programs to help lift women out of the commercial sex trade, enabling them to sew their way to a more fulfilling future.
Why We Love It!
Kantha (or gudari or raliya, depending on where you are) quilts are gorgeous: dreamy and evocative, each one is made from six layers of 100% recycled cotton saris. The style is the darling of Anthropologie and West Elm among many others, and this is a fabulous way to make your boho hippie chic work double duty—sweetening up your space even as it supports women gaining greater independence.
The Good News...
An estimated two to three million women working in the sex trade in India alone – many of whom entered the profession early and were forced to drop out of school to increase their earnings, losing their chance at education and a better life. Anchal provides alternative careers in the textile industry, including trainings, healthcare, and a competitive salary. They also help to put the children of their artisans through secondary school, ultimately giving – through education – the gift of choice.
We're Loving...
Nice try getting us to choose just one! No two quilts are alike, but the spicy effortlessness of the Barahdaree and the Diggi’s playful elegance push them quite high on our list.
Prices for these lovely creations range from $180 to $200. Get your own here.
