Hats Off to These Guys
Krochet Kids’ mission is simple, really.
Buy a hat (or shirt, or scarf); change a life. After all, that’s their slogan (plus or minus a few words), and it’s certainly not an empty promise. The internet-based, nonprofit apparel company is doing good by way of providing financial independence to working women in Uganda.
The fact that their catalog of items is composed of cool scarves, trendy T-shirts and hip hats should come as no surprise, though; the three founding do-gooders started out by hand-making their own hats for their favorite high school pastime – snowboarding.
While in college, the crafty fellas spent their summers volunteering in ailing countries such as Uganda, and in turn, found their calling: Teach others to crochet and help them to make a living. Krochet Kids was started and the rest is history.
You order a surprisingly stylish crocheted hat (our favorites have to be the Barney and the Margot), and a real person, with real crochet hooks (read: not machine made in a factory) crafts your hat out of the likes of wool, bamboo, or other materials and it gets shipped straight to you. With every loop that comprises Krochet Kids’ items, hard-working women get paid fair wages they otherwise wouldn’t be able to earn.
Watch the video of Akello Welsy Olara and see how her life has changed drastically with just hook and yarn and a little help from these awesome guys.
Who knew making such a sizeable difference in someone’s life could be as simple as buying a little hat?
