How Much Water Is Needed?
This morning, as you drink your coffee or sip your tea, take a moment to consider how much water goes into the production of everything you consume. Though it might seem like an odd exercise, it's probably more important than you know. And since today is World Water Day, we can't think of a better time to spread the word.
Water is one of the most important resources on earth. You know this. But did you know that 884 million people lack access to clean water? Or that water is deeply tied to world hunger? This year, the UN decided to focus their energy on raising awareness about the link between water and food security. The 2012 slogan—"The World is Thirsty Because We are Hungry"—drives home the point perfectly. But let's dive a little deeper…
Here's The Beef:
When it comes down to it, the vast majority of the water we use doesn't come in a Nalgene or flow from a tap. According to the United States Center for Disease Control, it takes one thousand times more water to feed a person than it does to satisfy their thirst. While the average person drinks just 2.5 liters of water a day, it takes 15,000 liters of water to produce just 2.2 lbs of beef. Your steak dinner comes with a weighty backstory.
Seventy Percent
of all water used goes into food production. This is more than the amount needed for domestic and industrial use combined.
What Are You Going To Do About It?
First of all, pay attention to how much food you buy and how much you actually eat. 30% of all food produced worldwide is never consumed—what a waste!
You can also donate your time, energy, or money to a charity that focuses on providing clean water to all people. Water.org is one phenomenal organization that is working to address the water crisis. Another great group is charity: water.
