Sukhinder Singh Cassidy Is Changing The World, One Click At A Time
Sukhinder Singh Cassidy is one of those woman you both admire and hope will be your friend. She has a resume that is beyond boast-worthy; she's spent the past 18 years working at various internet and media companies in executive positions, including stints at power players like Google and Amazon. She sits on boards, helps advise companies like Twitter, and now she's even started her own company. We think Joyus, an online shopping experience fueled by video, is sure to be a success. We know you will feel the same way we did after reading the Q&A we had with Sukhinder…. Impressed!
You have an impressive background having worked at Google, Amazon, Polyvore amongst others. What makes you a good leader?
I try and use the energy and passion I have to accelerate teams of people accomplish things they never thought possible. That's actually what being in a startup is all about - trying to make something happen and accomplishing it by inspiring, innovating, executing with a diverse team of people.
Why did you start Joyus? What do you love about it?
I started Joyus for two reasons. First, because it feeds my personal passions and second, because I think it has the potential to be a tremendous business model that takes online shopping to a whole new level. I have always loved the idea of delighting and empowering women, and I think that creating a shopping platform that helps them feel connected is a good thing. I also think that video is being consumed online as never before, and the opportunity to be a part of that is compelling.
Supporting women in business is important to you. Please elaborate.
As a woman, and an executive, and a mother, and a wife, and a daughter and a sister, I feel like I wear multiple hats each and every day. I do think it takes an extra amount of energy and support for women to be able to achieve what they want both professionally and personally, given all their roles, and if I can help support them in their goals… that's personally rewarding for me.
Are there particular causes or charities that you support and why?
I am currently on the board of Jobtrain, a non-profit dedicated entirely to vocational training programs for troubled youth and adult in the Bay area and am also spending time with the Center for Reproductive Rights. The Center is doing incredible work nationally and globally to protect women's basic human rights regarding their reproductive health, and using the constitution and human rights laws to do it.
If you were allowed to change one thing about the world, what would it be?
If I could change one thing about the world, including within myself, it would be to give us all the ability to live in and enjoy the present. My mind is always racing ahead, and I find it so inspiring to be with people who can be present in the moment. I wish we all had a "live in the present" gene!
