“It Girl” Does Good
Stylist, designer, photographer and "it" girl, Alexa Winner has made philanthropy a central part of her life and work. Alexa's involvement with organizations that serve the needs of children around the globe fuels her passion for fashion and her drive to make a difference.
Alexa is one of many young New Yorkers who has lent her name and support to the recent Valentine's Day benefit that Seeds of Africa held this week to raise money to support the Seeds of Africa Knowledge Center; a modern technology school to be built in Mutare, Zimbabwe. This will be one more step toward fulfilling their mission to create a self-sustaining model for education and community development that can be replicated in African communities.
We got the gorgeous do-gooder to talk to Milkshake about her involvement with Seeds of Africa. Learn about her most inspiring moment, and what made her join the cause, below.
What attracted you to the cause?
When Mr. Ganda contacted me about being a committee member for the Seeds of Africa "Spread the Seed" Valentines Day charity event, there was simply no way that I could decline. Having what I would consider the absolute privilege of being able to travel the world to areas such as Haiti and Southeast Asia to work hands-on in underprivileged communities developing and fostering schools, I already understood the astronomical importance behind the mission that the charity stood to fulfill. Supporting early-childhood education is the only hope that any of us have for a future.
What has been the most fulfilling aspect of your involvement/work with the organization?
The most fulfilling aspect of working with Seeds of Africa is not thinking, but KNOWING, that the actions a person so small as I have taken in these few months have ultimately impacted the lives of many not just for months, but for a lifetime.
What has been the most inspiring moment since you began supporting Seeds of Africa?
The most inspiring part of working specifically with the Seeds of Africa charity and committee members has been observing how proactive everyone is, and how dedicated. Since the inception of Mr. Ganda's idea for this event, I have been absolutely floored by the community's outpouring support in not only helping to fulfill the goals and initial ideas Mr. Ganda had set, but setting the bar higher by developing even larger goals.
