Moms - The Singing Celebrity Kind
You pick up a magazine and read about super moms, but come on, are they for real?
You may know Christy Turlington Burns as a sought after model, but she is also a devoted yogi, designer, filmmaker, advocate for maternal and child health and the mother of two.
She grew up being inspired by her mother María Elizabeth, a native of El Salvador, and a passionate volunteer. In 2005, Christy and her mom traveled to El Salvador as advocates on behalf of CARE, which cemented Christy’s devotion to helping those who are in need.
That devotion only increased when Christy had complications after the birth of her first child and was easily able to find emergency care. The scare made her realize just how many millions of women do not have the level of care that is often needed and how many children and mothers die during childbirth.
Christy recently directed the documentary No Woman, No Cry, which tells powerful stories of at-risk pregnant women from all over the world, including a slum of Bangladesh, a post-abortion care ward in Guatemala, and a prenatal clinic in the United States.
Starbucks and Christy teamed up to create a CD featuring songs by their favorite artists. $8.00 per CD will be donated to CARE, a partner in action with Every Mother Counts, for maternal health-relief efforts worldwide.
The CD's track listing features a roster of incredible talent: Madonna, Sheryl Crow, Jennifer Lopez, Carla Bruni, Gwyneth Paltrow and many other amazing women ... who also happen to be moms!
CARE is a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty. We place special focus on working alongside poor women because, equipped with the proper resources, women have the power to help whole families and entire communities escape poverty. Women are at the heart of CARE's community-based efforts to improve basic education, prevent the spread of disease, increase access to clean water and sanitation, expand economic opportunity and protect natural resources. CARE also delivers emergency aid to survivors of war and natural disasters, and helps people rebuild their lives.
