Peace and Buy It
Today is International Peace Day! Think jewelry can’t create world peace? If it’s made from a bomb, think again.
During the Vietnam War, Laos was the victim of another, ‘Secret War,’ carried on by the CIA. For nine years, cluster bombs were dropped throughout the country, every eight minutes, 24/7. Today, bombs continue to go off, injuring and killing many and destroying the abundant farmland that sustains the Laotian economy.
Farmers continue to pick exploding bomb material out of their land. One day, a local artisan discovered a way to repurpose the explosive metal and make spoons. Soon after, Elizabeth Suda, a history buff and former fashion merchandiser living in Laos discovered the artisan and proposed a new idea – designing bracelets. With that, peaceBOMB was born.
peaceBOMB’s line of bomb-made bracelets are not only fashion-savvy and well designed, but the income made from purchases goes to the Laos communities that have suffered because of this secret war.
There are plenty of bracelets to choose from, including the NY Loves Peace, released specifically for New York’s Fashion Night Out 2011. Check out the trailer for the documentary about the jewelry, Buying Back the Bombs.
