Push Pull Cambodia: #71
Nowadays, you can find Ikat-print skirts at Forever 21. West Elm and Pottery Barn are full of pillows bearing the distinctive pattern—but what if you want something a little more authentic? Let Push Pull Cambodia win you over.
Why We Love It!
Push Pull Cambodia offers a variety of different items in their online store, from wallets to tote bags and pillows. While we adore the pillows (they would look striking on our dark blue couch!) we were particularly taken with the weekender bags. A perfect blend of practicality and style, these sturdy bags all feature Ikat fabric woven by hand in Takeo Province. The nautical-themed rope handles are right on trend, and the colors are gorgeous. Perfection, all around!
Though many Americans have a very specific view of what Ikat patterns are like, the name actually comes from the technique used to produce the prints. Historians believe that Ikat is one of the oldest types of woven textile, and is produced around the world with many regional variations. In Cambodia, Takeo Province is the hub of Ikat weaving, and that's where Push Pull's lovely textiles come from.
The Good News...
Push Pull Cambodia was founded in 2008 to link skilled Khmer artisans to Western markets, thus giving these weavers a way to make a living. "Our goal is to stimulate a renaissance of Cambodian Ikat," their website explains. "This will provide long-term employment and result in improved quality of life for our artisans and their families." Instead of buying some mass-produced print at a big box store, shop Push Pull and you can help support a Khmer family.
