RS Handmade: #70

Robert Siegel makes dinnerware that is more than just the sum of its parts. His shop sells useful things, certainly, but what may appear to be just a dining set is in fact something more. It's a perfectly choreographed piece of art. Don't believe us? Take another look.

Defining himself as a "designer-craftsman," Robert Siegel creates ceramics that are highly functional, but truly beautiful. His aesthetic is the result of studying both at the Miami University in Ohio and with experts in China. He spent several years in Jingdezhen, the birthplace of fine porcelain, completing two artistic residencies at Jackson Li’s Sanbao International Ceramic Village and Caroline Cheng’s Pottery Workshop. It was there that he learned many of the techniques he employes in his L.A. workshop.

RS Handmade merges ancient knowledge with modern design to create unique and elegant ceramics. Siegel's online shop offers several different collections, from the Kauai vases, which are defined by simple lines and pops of bright, jewel-like color. The Ostrich Collection is his pretty, dotted tableware (shown above). These wheel-throne porcelain pieces are decorative enough for company, but simple enough for everyday use. Siegel has also joined forces with artist Aaron Hawks for his Torn collection, creating pieces that are both delicate and highly experimental, like the set of bowls shown at left.

Our Pick?

We're classicists at heart, which explains why we adore the RS Handmade Standard Collection. Available in multiple colors, we are particularly partial to the sky blue and red combination. It's distinctive enough to make a statement, while being timeless enough to last for years.

Price Check

Siegel's pieces run anywhere from $36 for a mug to $195 for a set of vases. Find out more here.
