UNITE Tours: Experience Africa Like You Never Have Before
When you travel abroad, it's hard not to feel like a stranger in a strange land. In truth, that's what you are. But travel can be about a lot more than that—just ask Anne Wells, founder of UNITE Tours, a company that offers a very unique way to experience Tanzania.
In contrast to many companies, which can make tourism feel like "a canned experience," UNITE seeks to offer a more sincere exchange. "Essentially, when you are a tourist, you are a big fat dollar sign," she says. "What we do is make it possible to share not just an experience, but also time and talents."
The way they do that is through their "field visits." Each field visit is added onto a safari tour (because no trip to Tanzania would be complete without checking out the wildlife!) and lasts for a half-day. UNITE has partnered with a number of grassroots organizations to create this one-of-a-kind, fully immersive experience. Depending on your interests, you can meet with the beekeepers at Maasai Honey—or you can hang out with the school children at Enduputo School, a primary school located in a rural and arid part of Maasailand. If you're a foodie, a philanthropist, or even a sports nut, UNITE Tours has a field visit for you.
The benefits of going on a field visit are manifold. "Everybody loves their time in the villages," Anne says. "It's what changes their lives the most." And it's not all fun and games (though there is some of that, too). Every person who goes on a tour seems to come back an ambassador for Africa. "It's a once in a lifetime thing. It allows you to see what is really happening in Africa in a very authentic way."
