Spokes of Change
So who’s ready for the millennium? It’s long past, you say? No, not that millennium. We’re talking about Millennium Promise. And this millennium has nothing to do with Y2K bugs.
Millennium Promise is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to reduce worldwide extreme poverty within our lifetime.
One of Millennium Promise’s campaigns really spins our wheels: Spokes of Change. The project helps provide bicycles, training, and equipment for Community Health Workers in rural Africa, who in turn deliver much needed services for young moms and children (just one health worker can care for up to 750 people!).
You don’t need to give the shirt off your back to donate to the cause—in fact, you can get a whole new shirt. Buying just one 100% cotton T-shirt—designed by Tommy Hilfiger—can cover the costs for an entire month’s worth of medical supplies for a health worker.
Or go in for something bigger, like an all-expenses paid trip and backstage passes to Hilfiger’s fashion show in New York, Team SAXO BANK-Sungard jersey signed by Tour de France Champion Alberto Contador & his team or even a meditation and private audience with Deepak Chopra via Spokes of Change’s auctions on CharityBuzz.
Really, whatever it takes to make the wheels go round and round in ending poverty—in this millennium.
Millennium Promise addresses the root causes of extreme poverty, taking a holistic, community-led approach to sustainable development. Partnering with government and business leaders, entrepreneurs, humanitarians, philanthropists, students, entertainers, and idealists from around the world, the organization’s work advances the global agenda to meet the basic needs of the poorest people in the world.
