The Writing’s On The Wrists
September has always been one of our favorite months. But this month is about more than just back-to-school shopping and apple picking. Did you know that September is also Suicide Prevention Month?
According to the World Health Organization, approximately one million people worldwide die by suicide every year. That's one suicide every 40 seconds. One of the leading causes of death, rates of suicide have grown by nearly 60% in some countries. It's a huge problem, and one we don't often talk about.
But this year, we wanted to bring attention to suicide prevention and awareness. Though there are a lot of ways to do this, one great organization is the U.S.-based nonprofit To Write Love On Her Arms. TWLOHA (we prefer the shortened version!) is dedicated to providing hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. Every year, TWLOHA raises thousands of dollars for organizations like the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Suicide Prevention International.
To raise money, TWLOHA sells merchandise and throws massive concerts. They also share stories on their website and provide resources for anyone seeking help. To find out more (or buy a t-shirt) check out TWLOHA.com.
And be sure to show your support on World Suicide Prevention Day. This year, it falls on September 10. Learn more about how you can make a difference by clicking here.
