Women Make The World Go ‘Round
March 8 is International Women's Day. How are you going to celebrate the occasion?
All people are created equal, yet one of the most historically oppressed groups in the world—still today—are women. Even though we make up half of the population, in many cultures, women have been viewed as lesser. They have been barred from seeking jobs, forced into marriages, and bought and sold. But thanks to organizations like CARE, the future looks like a much brighter place for those of us with the double-X chromosomes.
Not only does CARE work in 87 different countries throughout the world to pull women out of poverty, they're also consistently seeking to raise awareness about the plight of women. Today, they're inviting women from around the globe to view an online screening of Pray the Devil Back to Hell, followed by an interactive chat with the film's executive producer, who will be running a panel discussion with several other experts on women's empowerment.
Still not sure how you are going to celebrate this important day? Instead of waiting until tomorrow, take a few hours this evening to view the important documentary, which tells the astonishing story of the brave Liberian women who took on the warlords and brought peace to their country back in 2003 (watch the trailer, above). Stick around to talk about what you've seen—we promise, this is the kind of film that inspires both dialogue and reflection.
If screening films on your computer doesn't sound too appealing, there are literally hundreds of other ways to celebrate the day. For more information, or to find an event near you, go to the official website of the global event.
Happy Women's Day!
