Green Gardeners: Recycled Tire Pots
Urban gardening is all the rage, and it doesn't get more urban than growing your flowers in old tires. And with UBeauty, a company based in Australia, the green look is far more homemaker than hobo.
UBeauty specializes in turning one man's trash into another man's treasure. They take old tires and turn them into stylish pots for your patio. Since tires are made with so many different chemical compounds, they are highly resistant to decomposition. Which makes perfect sense when you consider how tough a tire must be to support the weight of your car, keep you from skidding on black ice, and roll along for thousands and thousands of miles.
As a result, landfills are chock full of materials that will last long before our lives are over. No longer useful, car tires will just sit in a garbage heap until they eventually break down… but who knows how long that takes?
Instead of letting them languish there, UBeauty turns them into functional pots—with a little help from a workshop in Pakistan. Formerly a leather-crafting shop, the small company was unable to afford leather, and so they began experimenting with old tires. Clearly, it was a success.
All tires at UBeauty are made in accordance with the "Certified for Compliance of Ethical Trading Initiative." Want one of your own? Place an order for the planters here.
