This One’s [Fore!] the Guys
This impressive duo takes the sensibility of an organic farmer's market and makes it look cool all the way to the 18th hole.
Ask Billy Nachman and Hobson Brown when they first came up with the concept for their organic apparel company, and they'll tell you it goes almost all the way back to grade school.
Friends since childhood, Billy and Hobson grew up wearing polo shirts as part of their school uniforms and, over the years, became enamored with those inherited from grandparents and found abroad during adventures in travel. As time wore on and favorite shirts went missing -- as laundry sometimes does -- they put their heads together and decided to make their own ideal shirts and introduce sustainable style to a market that hadn't yet been tapped: golf apparel. So, collectively, they put their architecture and creative marketing background to good use, launching their own brand in 2010.
As a result, Criquet Shirts are taking the world by storm with super-soft, vintage-chic, 100% organic golf and polo shirts ($75-78) that hearken back to the Rat Pack era but with an organic twist. The guys communicate with their customers often but rarely talk about their shirts; earlier this year, they unleashed a series of good green living recipes on their blog, offering stylish suggestions for going green without sacrificing tradition or... ahem... masculinity in doing so.
Want to build a chicken coop or backyard greenhouse? Need smart suggestions for eco-friendly Mother's and Father's Day gifts? Criquet's got it covered, and it delivers its how-to's with an air of old-school cool. The mishmash is a fascinating social study in the crossroads of past and present, tradition and progression. Per our scorecard, the result's a hole in one.
