Social Change Scavenger Hunt
DoSomething.org, 85% of teens in the United States say they want to volunteer, but only 35% actually do. The number one reason they don’t volunteer? No on asked them to. DoSomething.org is making that excuse a thing of the past.
Teens care about their community, causes and the world that will soon be their oyster, even if they feign nonchalance around you. According toEach month, DoSomething.org – the largest social change organization for teens – launches two fun campaigns encouraging the under 25 set to get involved at the grassroots level. Past campaigns like the “Teens for Jeans” drive helped amass 2.5 million pairs for the needy and the “Give a Spit” effort resulted in 15,000 new donors to help save the lives of leukemia patients. This month, young adults are asked to team up and take part in a charitable scavenger hunt simply called “The Hunt.”
11 Days of Doing
From July 10 through July 20 teams of teens will receive daily challenges via email or text focusing on a gamut of causes that teens care about most. Past challenges have included wearing a statistic to spread awareness of an issue in the community, setting up an email account for a senior citizen and showing them how to use it, and writing a letter to one of the troops. Challenges come with info on how to complete the task and an assigned number of reward points.
Fringe Benefits
To grease the wheels of change, DoSomething.org offers goodies for do-gooders who complete the most tasks. Prizes for those who report back on their completed missions include Lenovo laptops and scholarship money or even a trip to Los Angeles to hang with the stars. But when it comes down to it, we all know that the true reward is the gratification they’ll get from stepping out their own reality into a wider, kinder world view.
