Kid-Inspired, Snoopy-Approved
A thoughtful non-profit blends the nostalgia of the Peanuts gang with the comfort of handmade blankets.
Security blankets go by many names... binky, blankie, wubbie, banky... but they all do the same thing: provide comfort when things get stressful.
Project Linus has been keeping kids blanketed with love through times of trouble since its founding in 1995. After reading a local news story about a little girl who had undergone two heartwrenching years of chemotherapy for leukemia with her favorite blanket by her side at each treatment to keep her calm, founder Karen Loucks sprang into action and started donating handmade blankets to Denver's Rocky Mountain Children's Cancer Center. Soon, she formed a non-profit and named it, appropriately enough, after the Peanuts' gang's beloved, blanket-toting character, Linus.
Today, Louck has the country covered with local chapters. She's developed relationships with hospitals around the nation, and the project also responds to fires, natural disasters and other situations in which kids could use a little unexpected gesture of warmth.
Why homemade?
Kids appreciate the effort. "Over and over they express how touched they are that a stranger would take the time to make something for them. They really know the difference."
Need inspiration? The site offers a host of free patterns, guides & inspiration points from all sorts of partners.
Can't sew?
Project Linus accepts monetary donations, as well as blanket-making supplies. Volunteers are welcome at every local chapter, too, for deliveries and coordinating efforts.
To date, more than 4.2 million blankets have been handed out to kids in need.
