Great American Bake Sale
Who doesn’t love a soft and chewy homemade chocolate chip cookie? Or, the gooey goodness of a Rice Krispies treat? It would be downright un-American not to get excited about a sweet, just as it would to let the 16 million children whose tummies growl go hungry in the world’s wealthiest nation. And that’s the point of the Great American Bake Sale.
Organized by Share Our Strength, a non-profit whose mission is to end childhood hunger by 2015, the Great American Bake Sale is a national campaign that gives people three easy, and yummy, ways to help – bake, buy and sell. They provide a slew of online resources to help individuals and groups organize and host bake sales. It can be as simple as taking a tray of brownies to work with a donation jar, to setting up table at a 4th of July event.
Since 2003, more than 1.7 million people have participated in the Great American Bake Sale, raising more than $6 million. If you’re craving to be a part of that, you can host a bake sale any time throughout the year, but Share Our Strength is looking to turn up the heat April 20-22 during their 3rd Annual National Challenge Weekend. Their goal is to have 500 bake sales take place across the nation.
The sweetest part is that funds raised go toward surrounding the one in five kids facing hunger with nutritious food where they live, learn and play. That definitely leaves a good taste in our mouths!
