Mothers Day Movement
“It’s time to move the apostrophe so that it becomes not just Mother’s Day, honoring a single mother, but Mothers’ Day, an occasion to try and help mothers around the globe as well.” Nicholas Kristof, author of Half the Sky.
If you’re still trying to figure out what to get your mom for Mother’s Day, we’ve got a great idea for you! We all know that moms have super-human powers—like eyes on the back of their heads, being able to kiss away pain, and knowing the exact second their children are getting into mischief. But their ability to spread joy is the greatest superpower of all. This year, enlist your mom to help save a woman from dying in childbirth by donating to the Mothers’ Day Movement.
When a small group of women learned that $14 billion is spent each year on Mother’s Day celebrations and gifts, they were shocked. They wanted to find a way to put that money to better use, and make the day more meaningful, by helping women and children suffering both in the U.S. and abroad. They launched an annual campaign that they dubbed the Mothers’ Day Movement to raise money each year for an organization that aligns with their mission.
Last year they were able to give $135,000 for Shining Hope for Communities, which builds and runs tuition-free schools for girls and provides community health clinics in Kenya. This year, the Mothers’ Day Movement selected to support Saving Mothers, an organization dedicated to reducing the number of women who die from childbirth.
Did you know that one woman dies every 90 seconds due to pregnancy and childbirth complications – the equivalent of three jumbo jets full of women crashing every day? Women in developing nations don’t have access to medical care or the supplies that we take for granted in the U.S. A donation of $10 or less allows Saving Mothers to provide one birthing kit and train local midwives in places like Liberia and Guatemala on how to decrease infection and stop hemorrhaging during delivery.
We know your mom's already a superhero, but join forces with the Mothers' Day Movement, and you can spread that power across the globe! Learn more—and make a donation—by clicking here.
