Purchase Power: World Autism Awareness Day
It’s hard not to be clued into what autism is and how many families it affects when you’re a parent – the figures are staggering. One in every 88 children has autism, with boys five times more likely to be affected, according to the Centers for Disease control. It’s the fastest growing developmental disability in the world with the number of reported cases increasing by 78% since 2007.
According to Autism Speaks, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. Autism appears to have its roots in very early brain development. However, the most obvious signs of autism and symptoms of autism tend to emerge between two and three years of age.
Today is World Autism Awareness Day. It’s the day to show how much you care about the cause, the parents who struggle to help their children, and the kids that will face greater challenges relating to the world.
