The Pajama Program
Who doesn’t want to live their whole life in their pajamas? Comfy, cozy and relaxed, you can’t wait to slip into them at the end of the day. And kids, well, it can sometimes take a half day of convincing to get them to change out of them! Believe it or not, there are many children who don’t even know what pajamas are.
Snuggly Luxuries
When Genevieve Piturro noticed children in shelters and group homes sleeping in their clothes because they didn’t own pajamas, she filled a shopping bag with new sleepwear and books and began to hand them out. When a little girl named Isabella quietly asked “What are these?” and “Where do I wear them?” Genevieve knew she had found her purpose in life.
A Virtual "Tuck-in"
Over the past 10 years, the Pajama Program has provided more than one million new pajamas and books to children living in group homes and shelters across the country. Pajama Program has also established reading centers in New York and New Jersey where they read to children in groups or individually. Reading time is followed by a snack and a package of new pajamas and a book. The youngsters also get to pick a book of their choosing off the shelf to take with them.
1.5
Million
That’s the number of children nationwide living in group homes, foster care, shelters, temporary housing, and below the poverty line. You can help! Give a child who has gone without something to call his own and a way to mentally escape his often harsh reality through reading by providing a pajama package.
